21. 2. 2025 Announcements

Kristína Jamrichová from the Laboratory of Cancer Biology describes her path to a PhD at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IMG), where she found not only a fascinating research topic, but also a strong student community. Her research focuses on the Ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), whose disorders are linked to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. How does she manage the balance between science and his personal life and what are his plans for the future?

What is it about science that really motivates you?

Science never gets boring; there are always new and exciting things to learn, and the knowledge gained can often benefit the world. That sense of discovery is what motivates me.

How and when did you decide to pursue a PhD at IMG?

During the final year of my master’s degree, I realized that I wanted to continue my education and pursue a PhD. IMG was one of the first institutions I considered, and now I can tell I made the right choice.

You are currently in your second year of PhD, what are the lessons that you learnt so far?

Beyond significantly improving my scientific skills, I’ve learned how vital a strong sense of community is in a workplace.

“Science never gets boring; there are always new and exciting things to learn.”

You currently work on UPS, what is so exciting about this area of research?

The UPS is fascinating because it plays a central role in maintaining cellular health by regulating protein quality control. Its dysfunction is linked to cancer, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases. Understanding and targeting the UPS holds great potential for breakthroughs in treating these conditions.

“My experience with the PhD community at IMG has been very positive, especially through activities like the PhD Bootcamp, conferences and other opportunities to interact with fellow students.”

What does your life outside of work looks like? And how do you maintain a balance between science and personal life?

Balancing work and personal life has been challenging, but I focus on my hobbies and make an effort to spend quality time with friends and family.

You are currently the PhD representative at IMG, what goals do you plan on undertaking with this position and what are your thoughts on the student community at IMG?

My goal is to encourage both new and experienced PhD students to participate in activities organized by the representatives. I aim to plan more regular, fun events like themed pub quizzes or board game nights to help us connect and build a stronger sense of community. My experience with the PhD community at IMG has been very positive, especially through activities like the PhD Bootcamp, conferences and other opportunities to interact with fellow students.

What are your future plans in your studies?

My main goal is to complete my PhD! Beyond that, I’m considering pursuing a postdoctoral position.

What is your favourite thing to do in Prague?

I enjoy spending time with my friends and exploring Prague’s rich culture through its food, art, and people.
